The Nigeria Communication Commission, NCC, begins enforcement of Code of Corporate Governance on Telecommunication companies in Nigeria. This was made known by the Evecutive Vice chairman of the Commission, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta.
“We are committed to raising the standards of leadership and management in the telecom sector,” Danbatta stated.
Those present to witnessed the event included the Chairman of NCC Board of Commissioners, Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye, the Executive Commissioner Stakeholder management, Mr Sunday Dare, NCC top management staff, representatives of Mobile Network Operators, and a broad spectrum of other telecom industry stakeholders.
If you can recall, NCC has been focusing on the protection of Telcos consumers and has reached this programme on many parts of the state. It has also use the media including the social platform especially on twitter to promotes telcos consumer protection. It also has a toll free line (622) in which telcos consumers can used to reach the Commission when they are dissatisfied.
Now, the code of corporate government is an intrinsic aspect of the NCC regulatory capacity along with the consumer protection. Moveover, the code has been in existence for for years. Among other things, the Commission will regulates telecom companies on
- Offices of the chairman and chief executive officer can not be run by one person simultaneously.
- No one can serve as chairman in any Telecommunication company for more than fifteen years.
Professor Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, speaking at The Renaissance Hotel Lagos, venue of the Stakeholders Sensitization Workshop on the provisions of the Code, said the centrality of telecommunication to all spheres of the Nation’s life demands that “we raise the standards of leadership and management in the sector to sustain the sector’s role as a driver of economic growth”.
