FRANCE SCORES FIRST ON FOOD SUSTAINABILITY INDEX-WHAT DID NIGERIA SCORE?

France, Japan and Canada were ranked the top three on the overall food sustainability index. Nigeria was ranked seventeen while south Africa was ranked sixteen out of the 25 countries researched.

The Food Sustainability Index, created by the Economist Intelligence Unit with Berilla Centre for Food and Nutrition, BCFN, is a tool designed to highlight international policies and best practices relating to global paradoxes and to the main SDGs for food, climate change, sustainable cities, responsible production and consumption, health, gender equality, education and infrastructure.

The study is composed of a white paper, a city monitor, infographics and a digital hub – all tools intended to further expand data relating to the 25 countries and the 16 cities which were at the centre of our research. The overall index is shown below:

The report shows that Nigeria needs to put more efforts to meet up with Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, 2030 on hunger, which is the second sustainable goal and of Food sustainability.

Therefore, policy makers are expected to create policies that will improve food sustainability in Nigeria.

The Bank of Industry, BOI, has a great role to play in this. The BOI move to disbursed N10billion to SMEs for Agriculture may be a step in the right direction.
