More on NCC Consumer Conversation at Suleja, Niger State

Speaking on the event, Professor Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC says the management of the commission has declared 2017 as the Year of Nigerian Telecom Consumer. He said the objective is to empower the consumer, enhance quality of services telecom service providers provide to comsumers, educate and inform them also. This is similar to what he said at Edo state.

“It is consistent with our recognition of the importance of the Consumer in the telecom industry” He stressed.

As a result of the campaign, the commission has provide a “Do Not Disturb” code 2442 to stop unsolicited SMS from service providers. Danbatta explained that a telecom consumer who does not wish to receive unsolicited messages from his service provider should simply text ‘STOP’ to the short code 2442″. However, if a consumer wishes to receive promotional messages on specific issues, the Consumer should send “HELP” to 2442 to choose  his/her preference(s) from the options available”

There is also a Toll Free line available to consumers to expressed their complaints relating to any issues which their service provider refused to resolved after it has been reported to them. The Toll Free line is 622. You can only call this number on working days. You cannot call it when there is a public holiday.

Another reasons for the campaign, according to the commission is to improve Quality of Service (QoS) and to educate consumers and stakeothers about Electromagnetic Feilds, EMF radiation. Danbatta termed this issue as generating so much misinformation, distortion and obfuscation of facts as opposed to outcome of scientific research.

He said that research conducted by World Health Organization, WHO made it clear that EMF do not pose any health threat on humans. He, therefore, adviced the general public to recheck rumours circulated in this regard.
